Population Health Strategies After a Natural Disaster

Population Health Strategies

Natural disasters happen all the time and unfortunately, we have no way of preventing them. But we can have effective Population Health Strategies in place to help recover after a natural disaster happens. When people help and volunteer it helps to make a community recover quickly from a natural disaster and get the population health back to good standing. Below are ways that people can help during a disaster to speed up the implementation of population health strategies.

Donating Money

One of the sure ways to help during a natural disaster is by donating money. There are a variety of programs and non-profit organizations that help during a disaster and donating money to them will help their efforts. When a disaster happens individuals can search for organizations that have been set up specifically to provide relief efforts but they can also donate to established organizations like the Red Cross or the Salvation Army. When donating money is advisable to visit the website of the organization to check their legitimacy and check if they are really helping. Also, watch the news and check to see how the organization is rated and if there are any negative reviews on how they operate. This way you can ensure that your money is going to the right relief efforts and if it is actually making a  difference.

Help Raise Money

In addition to donating money individuals can also help by volunteering to raise money. If you don’t have money to give then you can give your time into calling people to have them donate money. Volunteering to raise money can be more effective even because you could help raise a lot of money that you wouldn't have been able to give out of pocket. Volunteering to raise money can be done on the phone, going door to door or other means. A lot of times donating money is more effective and useful that donating supplies like food, medication, used clothing etc. The logistics of handling physical donations like used clothes and medication can be a lot of trouble sometimes they can’t find proper storage for the items, or they have not enough resources and manpower to sort through conned food and medication to ensure they meet health standards and other regulations.

Donating Blood

When a terrible disaster happens, population health strategies are more concerned with providing medical attention to those physically injured. Donating blood helps provide blood to victims who need it and it helps a lot because in as much as donating medical supplies and medication can help if the hospitals and relief centers do not have enough blood to treat patients it becomes a problem. People should check if they are eligible to donate blood and donate some blood after a disaster happens.

On Location Help

 Population Health Srtategies

After a natural disaster, if you are in close proximity to where the disaster happened, you can go to the location to provide a helping hand. Organizations would need volunteers to help clear debris, man the phones, sort through donated items, help disaster survivors, deliver food and water and other goods to survivors, stock food pantries, unload trucks etc. There is ever hardly a shortage of what to do in a disaster site. After a disaster, individuals can call or search websites to find information on how you can provide on location help and support. Volunteers don’t have to wear a special uniform, have specific qualifications or sign up for the program. Individuals can volunteer by simply helping people going through a rough time.

Donate to a Company Matching All Donations

Another way individuals can help during a natural disaster is to donate money to a company or organization that have sworn to match all donations. This way, whatever money a person donates goes a long way. During a disaster, big companies and corporation usually pledge to match every donation made through their platform or a platform they choose. That way if the total donation pulled from the public is a hundred thousand dollars, the corporation also donates one hundred thousand dollars effectively doubling the donations and money raised. SO the more people donate to these programs the more money there is and the further the disaster relief efforts can go. Participating in one of these fundraisers means money for supplies and aid gathers much, much, faster.

Volunteer in Coming Months

Population Health Strategies

Usually, after a natural disaster, people forget about it and buzz dies down, people stop volunteering and people stop donating money. People go back to their everyday lives and forget about the disaster but the reality is the affected areas and people still need months and sometimes even more than a year to get back to normal. If people want to help, they should keep volunteering even months after the disaster and even when the buzz has died down. If you can’t volunteer immediately after the disaster happened, you still can months later. If you volunteered during the disaster and still have time and resources months later, it will still be much needed. A simple google search will provide information about ongoing relief efforts that can be joined and some of them even provide transportation to transport volunteers to relief sites or refugee camps to help out. Individuals can also check local university’s community engagement or service programs to see if they have anything planned. They usually have summer volunteer programs where they provide transportation and accommodation to anyone who is willing to volunteer.
